Our environmental programs

Connected places.
Connected responsibilities.

From sapling cultivation to environmental learning, our programs connect practical action with the people and places of Northeast Syria.

Reforestation and Green Spaces

Planting is a shared activity as well as a practical intervention in local spaces. Warshin’s records describe campaigns in neighbourhoods, villages, parks and school grounds, often alongside residents, volunteers and other organizations.

Our objective

Support the creation and care of local green spaces, and encourage community participation in planting and protecting saplings.

Documented examples

  • Participation in a joint planting campaign in Qamishli in April 2022; the campaign total belongs to all participating organizations.
  • Planting activities in Tal Shair and Taalak in 2022, followed by activities in Kudu, Kishka and Kutia in 2023.
  • The 2024 records describe planting in Qamishli, Amuda and Tel Arbid, including school and neighbourhood sites.

Nurseries and Seedling Production

The nursery brings together cultivation, irrigation and the everyday care of plants. Established in the Qamishli countryside in 2022, it provides a setting for growing forest and fruit-tree saplings and connecting cultivation with local greening activities.

Our objective

Cultivate and care for saplings suitable for the association’s planting activities, while supporting practical environmental learning.

Documented examples

  • The early nursery record describes a well and drip-irrigation network.
  • Reported tree varieties include cypress, pine, olive, mulberry and pomegranate.
  • The 2024 activity report describes continuing sapling cultivation and nursery management. Nursery stock is not counted as trees planted in communities.

Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Resilience

Warshin’s agricultural work connects practical cultivation with learning about responsible resource use. Conservation agriculture, water-aware irrigation, crop-fire awareness and discussion of risk are approaches described in the association’s records. Climate resilience is a program aim, not a measured outcome claimed here.

Our objective

Encourage practical learning about sustainable cultivation, responsible water use and the reduction of environmental risks in agriculture.

Documented examples

  • A 2026 GIZ collaboration account describes agricultural demonstration plots and awareness sessions for farmers at the association’s nursery.
  • The 2023 records describe distribution of crop-fire prevention information in Qamishli and its countryside.
  • Warshin took part in a food-security conference in Amuda in August 2023, including discussion of irrigation and greenhouse practices.

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Protection

Attention to natural resources extends beyond planted trees. Warshin’s activity records include discussion of agricultural biodiversity and initiatives involving the aquatic environments of the Jazira region. These accounts document activities; they do not establish ecosystem recovery or a measured increase in biodiversity.

Our objective

Bring attention to local ecosystems and the resources associated with them, through environmental dialogue and documented field activities.

Documented examples

  • A World Environment Day symposium in Qamishli in June 2022 included a Warshin contribution on agricultural biodiversity in Syria.
  • Two fish-release activities are reported at Mezkift and Mashouq dams in July 2023.
  • Any claims about longer-term ecological change would require monitoring beyond these activity accounts.

Environmental Education and Youth Engagement

Environmental learning becomes tangible when children take part in caring for the places around them. Warshin’s school activities connect tree planting with responsibility for schoolyards and green spaces, alongside classroom and community awareness activities.

Our objective

Help children and young people understand local environmental issues and participate in practical care for shared spaces.

Documented examples

  • The 2022 “Environment is Life” school campaign coordinated planting with three schools in Qamishli’s Al-Hilaliyeh neighbourhood.
  • The activity report describes involving children in planting to encourage care for shrubs and awareness of green spaces.
  • The 2024 waste-awareness records also describe environmental education activities with children and adults.

Waste Management and Community Awareness

Warshin’s waste work combines awareness, dialogue, cleaning and community greening. The activity records connect information about pollution and disposal practices with participation in the care of neighbourhoods and public spaces.

Our objective

Encourage responsible disposal practices and discussion of waste-related environmental problems through accessible information and community activities.

Documented examples

  • The 2024 IMPACT collaboration account describes awareness sessions, brochures, videos and community greening in Qamishli.
  • Earlier records describe a cleaning campaign and awareness brochures in Qamishli’s public park in August 2022.
  • In June 2023, Warshin participated in environmental pollution dialogue in Al-Hasakah and discussion of plastic waste in Qamishli.
